TOWNSHIP SPONSORED PROGRAMS...

Karate classes resume in September at Camp Jefferson

With summer almost over and autumn moving in, it’s a great time to enroll in the Jefferson Township Recreation Department’s Karate Program as it resumes its next 10-week session on Monday, September 27 and continues through Monday, November 29, 2010.  The program is open to school age children ages Kindergarten and up as well as adults.

This on-going program has been running for almost nine years through the Recreation Department with instructors from the Jersey Judo Karate Academy of Kenvil teaching the Isshinryu style of Karate.  The skills learned help students develop coordination, balance, posture, and endurance. Students also gain self-confidence and discipline through progression in karate, while studying the authentic form of Asian Martial Arts. Jersey Judo Karate Academy is run by Sensei Rick Norris, a Hachi-Dan (8th degree black belt), and the Academy’s staff includes over 50 certified, fully trained black belts.

Classes are held in the Community Lodge at Camp Jefferson on Weldon Road at 6:30 to 7:30 pm for grades K- 3rd grade and 7:30 to 8:30 pm for grades 4 through adults.  Registration is through the Jefferson Township Recreation Department or by mail; and the office is located at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road and is open Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 4:30 PM and on Friday from 8 am to 3:30 pm.

For additional information or to request a registration form, contact the Recreation office at 973-663-8404.  You can also log on to www.jeffersontownship.net and go to the Forms Center link, scroll down to the Recreation Department, and print out a Child’s or Adult’s registration form.

Special needs children encouraged to join the          2010 Challenger baseball program

The Jefferson Township Recreation Department is offering its baseball Little League Challenger Division for special needs children again this spring following successful programs since 2007.  Registration for the program is now open, and the $25 fee (jersey, cap, and award) for the Spring 2010 team has been waived due to fundraising efforts.  Registration forms to play, manage, umpire, assistant coach, serve as a team parent, or become a “buddy” to a player will be available at the Jefferson Township Recreation Department office located at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road as well as in the lobby brochure racks at the Jefferson Township Municipal Building and the Jefferson Township Public Library.  Registration forms will be distributed throughout the Jefferson Township school district as well.

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.  Boys and girls ages 5 - 18 (or the completion of high school) with physical or mental challenges are invited to participate.  Scott Luker, a resident of Jefferson Township, will return as director of the league.

Over the years, The Challenger Division has removed the barriers that keep children off the baseball field and being treated just like all the other kids.  Players have the opportunity to participate in Tee Ball, Coach-Pitch, or Player-Pitch levels with the option to use the “buddy” system for assistance on the field.  Players wear the same uniforms and use the same equipment as other Little Leaguers, every player on the roster plays the entire game, and no score is kept. In addition, the program has been proven therapeutic, strengthens self-esteem, encourages teamwork and sportsmanship, and provides a new avenue of socialization.

For general information about The Challenger Division of the Little League program, log on to http://www.littleleague.org/divisions/challenger.asp   For information about Jefferson’s league contact Team Director Scott Luker at 973-902-4770 or e-mail him at slairforceone@optonline.net  You can also call the Jefferson Township Recreation office at 973-663-8404 or log on to www.jeffersontownship.net - Recreation Department for information.
