New Karate classes begin in June at Camp Jefferson
The Jefferson Township Recreation Department’s Karate Program will begin its next 10-week session on Monday, June 11, 2018 and continue through Monday, August 23, 2018. The program is open to school age children ages Kindergarten and up as well as adults.
This on-going program has been running for 12 years through the Recreation Department with instructors from the Jersey Judo Karate Academy of Kenvil teaching the Isshinryu style of Karate. The skills learned help students develop coordination, balance, posture, and endurance. Students also gain self-confidence and discipline through progression in karate, while studying the authentic form of Asian Martial Arts. Jersey Judo Karate Academy is run by Sensei Rick Norris, a Kudan (9th degree black belt), and the Academy’s staff includes over 50 certified, fully trained black belts.
Classes are held in the Community Lodge at Camp Jefferson on Weldon Road at 6:30 to 7:30 pm for grades K- 4th grade and 7:30 to 8:30 pm for grades 5 through adults. Registration is now on-line through Community Pass. The program fee is $55 per person with a discount of $10 per person for the second, third, etc. sibling enrolled.
The Jefferson Township Recreation Department is now exclusively using an online registration system through Community Pass. Log on to http://www.communitypass.net, the community/organization is Jefferson Township, and if you already have a Community Pass account, enter your log in and password, choose the activity under the season “Winter-Spring 2018”, register and pay the class fee. If you forgot your log in or password, the system allows you to recover your log in using your email address and reset your password or call the Recreation Department for a temporary password.
If you need to set up a Community Pass account, a parent can easily follow the prompts to set up a personal account in his/her name as an adult; and then add the child to the account, register the child for Karate, and pay for this activity. You will automatically receive an email confirmation after you register and make your payment.

FULL payment must be received NO LATER than 5 business dates after registration is completed. FULL payment can be made online at checkout with a MC, VISA, or Discover credit card subject to a 2.65% bank convenience fee. Or you can choose to “Send Payment” at check out and drop off a check, cash, or money order to the Camp office at Camp Jefferson. Or you can mail a check to the Camp office postmarked within 5 business days of registration, but do not mail cash.Or scan/email, fax, drop off at the office, or mail payment.
IF FULL WITHIN 5 BUSINESS DAYS OF REGISTRATION, YOUR REGISTRATION FACES CANCELLATION AND YOU/YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND KARATE CLASS.
Karate participants must be registered and the class fee paid in full BEFORE attending the first class on June 11. A late registration fee will take effect as of June 25.
Jefferson Rec to host The Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic on April 11, 2018
The Youth Sports Research Council in cooperation with the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association presents The Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic -- Sports Awareness for Educating Today's Youth hosted by the Jefferson Township Recreation Department on Wednesday, April 11 from 6:45 to 10 pm in the Jefferson Township Municipal Building, 1033 Weldon Road, Lake Hopatcong, NJ. All Jefferson Township volunteer sports coaches as well as out-of-town volunteer sports coaches are invited to attend but must pre-register, and the registration deadline is Friday, April 11 at 4pm.
The State of New Jersey requires volunteer coaches to attend a “safety orientation and training skills program” in order to be eligible for civil immunity protection provided by the Little League Law (2A:62A-6 et. seq.) The curriculum for this Clinic is based upon the Minimum Standards for Volunteer Coaches Safety Orientation and Training Skills Programs (N.J.A.C. 5:52) and has been tested in court as having met the standards.
The topics for this class include Legal Aspects of Coaching, Psychological Aspects of Coaching, General Coaching Concepts, Training and Conditioning of Athletes, and Medical/First Aid Aspects of Coaching. Volunteer coaches who attend this program receive The Coaches Reference Manual (4th edition), a certification card acknowledging attendance, and a permanent registration with the Rutgers YSRC.

Jefferson Rec to host Child Abuse Awareness Training on April 5, 2018
It is important to educate volunteer coaches about how to understand and coach their players. This free Child Abuse Awareness seminar will give you the tools you need to protect your players on and off the field. Hosted by the Jefferson Township Recreation Department, the class will be held on Thursday, April 5 in the Main Lodge at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road, Lake Hopatcong, NJ at 7 pm. All Jefferson Township volunteer sports coaches are required to attend and out-of-town volunteer sports coaches are invited to attend but everyone must pre-register.
Learn to understand what child abuse and neglect means to child survivors (of physical, sexual, neglect and emotional abuse); cultural, social, economic, political, and familial factors that contribute to the various types of child abuse and neglect that takes place within families; and how social and economic policy can contribute to prevention and to the promotion of child and family well-being.
Develop an understanding of the range of intervention resources, including educational materials and local direct services, available to children, families, administrators,, and practitioners; and be positioned to contribute to child abuse and neglect prevention on the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
