Jefferson Rec to host The Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic on March 24
The Youth Sports Research Council in cooperation with the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association presents The Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic -- Sports Awareness for Educating Today's Youth hosted by the Jefferson Township Recreation Department on Friday, March 24 from 6:45 to 10 pm in the Jefferson Township Municipal Building, 1033 Weldon Road, Lake Hopatcong, NJ. All Jefferson Township volunteer sports coaches as well as out-of-town volunteer sports coaches are invited to attend but must pre-register, and the registration deadline is Friday, March 24th at 4:00pm.
The State of New Jersey requires volunteer coaches to attend a “safety orientation and training skills program” in order to be eligible for civil immunity protection provided by the Little League Law (2A:62A-6 et. seq.) The curriculum for this Clinic is based upon the Minimum Standards for Volunteer Coaches Safety Orientation and Training Skills Programs (N.J.A.C. 5:52) and has been tested in court as having met the standards.
The topics for this class include Legal Aspects of Coaching, Psychological Aspects of Coaching, General Coaching Concepts, Training and Conditioning of Athletes, and Medical/First Aid Aspects of Coaching. Volunteer coaches who attend this program receive The Coaches Reference Manual (4th edition), a certification card acknowledging attendance, and a permanent registration with the Rutgers YSRC.
Registration for this training class is online -- The Jefferson Township Recreation Department is currently transitioning to an online registration system through Community Pass. Log on to http://www.communitypass.net and follow the prompts to set up your own personal account and register and pay for this class being sponsored by the Jefferson Township Recreation Department. You will automatically receive an email confirmation after you register and make your payment. Note: This class is FREE to all Jefferson Township coaches who register, and all out-of-town volunteer coaches will be charged a fee of $31.

Creek Ski Club busing, Rec Department bus trips, Teen Scene, Camp Jefferson Summer Day Camp, etc. so remember your log in and password.

Jefferson and Skylands offers Learn to Skate and Youth Hockey Lessons
Jefferson Township Recreation is partnering with Skylands Ice World to offer an entry level Learn to Skate program and Youth Hockey lessons at their 2765 State Highway 23
Stockholm, NJ location.
The entry level Youth Hockey lesson program will consist of 10 weeks of fast-paced hockey action coached by Patrick Choules, Skylands Ice World’s Hockey Director. He has a very extensive background in hockey including his NCAA play at Potsdam, and he’s excelled at every level of hockey and knows what it takes to get to the next level. The session will start on Monday, February 27 and run through Monday, May 15 from 6:10 to 7:10 p.m. (no class on 4/3 and 4/17 due to Kings’ tryouts). The early registration session cost is $150 and the price increases to $160 on February 27. A very limited supply of hockey equipment is available for loan, skates and helmets are available, please dress for a winter outdoor activity. Session is limited to 50 players.
The entry level Learn to Skate program will consist of seven weeks of ice skating instruction coached by Skylands Skating Academy Director Kim Sutton-Murphy. She has a very extensive background in figure skating and program direction and has excelled at every level of skating. Session options are Wednesdays from March 1 through May 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Fridays from March 3 through May 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Pre-school Fridays from March 3 through May 19 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; or Saturdays March 4 through May 20 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. (no classes on 4/5, 4/7, 4/8, 4/19, 4/21, and 4/22 due to Kings’ tryouts and spring break). If registered prior to March 1, the 10-week program cost is $150; after March 1, the cost is $160. Note that a $15 USFS fee for insurance is also required, skates and helmets are available to rent, dress for a winter outdoor activity.

New Karate classes begin in March at Camp Jefferson
The Jefferson Township Recreation Department’s Karate Program will begin its next 10-week session on Monday, March 6, 2017 and continue through Monday, May 15, 2017. There will be no class on April 10th. The program is open to school age children ages Kindergarten and up as well as adults.
This on-going program has been running for 12 years through the Recreation Department with instructors from the Jersey Judo Karate Academy of Kenvil teaching the Isshinryu style of Karate. The skills learned help students develop coordination, balance, posture, and endurance. Students also gain self-confidence and discipline through progression in karate, while studying the authentic form of Asian Martial Arts. Jersey Judo Karate Academy is run by Sensei Rick Norris, a Kudan (9th degree black belt), and the Academy’s staff includes over 50 certified, fully trained black belts.
Classes are held in the Community Lodge at Camp Jefferson on Weldon Road at 6:30 to 7:30 pm for grades K- 4th grade and 7:30 to 8:30 pm for grades 5 through adults. Registration is through the Jefferson Township Recreation Department or by mail; and the office is located at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road and is open Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 4:30 PM and on Friday from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The program fee is $55 per person with a discount of $10 per person for the second, third, etc. sibling enrolled.
The Jefferson Township Recreation Department is now exclusively using an online registration system through Community Pass. Log on to http://www.communitypass.net, the community/organization is Jefferson Township, and if you already have a Community Pass account, enter your log in and password, choose the activity under the season “Winter-Spring 2017” and register your child and pay the class fee. If you forgot your log in or password, the system will allow you to recover your log in using your email address and reset your password or call the Recreation Department for a temporary password.
If you need to set up a Community Pass account, a parent can easily follow the prompts to set up a personal account in his/her name as an adult; and then add the child to the account, register the child for Karate, and pay for this activity. You will automatically receive an email confirmation after you register and make your payment.

Karate participants must be registered and the class fee paid in full BEFORE attending the first class on March 6.
